1. Cranberries: The little berry that could
Every red-blooded American knows that when it comes to Thanksgiving, cranberries are American as apple pie. Contrary to popular belief, cranberries didn't come over on the Mayflower, though, but were a staple of Native Americans long before the first Thanksgiving was celebrated in 1621. They are one of only three native North American fruits - Concord grapes and blueberries are the others - and before the Pilgrims dubbed them "crane berry" (because the shape of the fruit's blossoms resembled the heads of cranes), Native Americans called them by names like ibimi, atoqua and sassamanesh.

4. Pizza on the grill
They don't look especially inviting. Stashed next to the cheese in the refrigerated deli case, the satchels of pizza dough look like sad little bags of putty. But pretty is as pretty does. 5. Beef kabobs are a perfect centerpiece for a celebration
My husband and one of his best friends were born only a day apart and love to celebrate their birthdays together. His pal, a professor like my spouse, and his wife are always at their home on Cape Cod in July so everyone gathers there for the festivities. We always steam lobsters for the main course and order a big cake for dessert, but we vary the appetizers and side dishes from year to year. To go with our Neptunian splurges, grilled miniature zucchini and yellow squash coated in olive oil and herbs were one of my contributions. Corn on the cob, a salad and crusty artisanal bread rounded out the main course. It was the appetizers, though, prepared by our hostess that almost stole the show.
