My husband and one of his best friends were born only a day apart and love to celebrate their birthdays together. His pal, a professor like my spouse, and his wife are always at their home on Cape Cod in July so everyone gathers there for the festivities. We always steam lobsters for the main course and order a big cake for dessert, but we vary the appetizers and side dishes from year to year. To go with our Neptunian splurges, grilled miniature zucchini and yellow squash coated in olive oil and herbs were one of my contributions. Corn on the cob, a salad and crusty artisanal bread rounded out the main course. It was the appetizers, though, prepared by our hostess that almost stole the show.

Avocados may be the biggest hit. California harvests nearly all domestically grown avocados, with San Diego County's production leading the state. About one-third of the fruit's crop in the state was believed to be in the fires' path, with more groves threatened, agriculture officials said.
